Celebrate

This year I threw a surprise party for Ross' 30th birthday. So he's not actually 3o yet. Meh. Who is going to show up on Christmas to celebrate with us anyhow? So I threw it on my daughter's birthday. Yep. Another Mother of the Year Award nomination right here.

The invite - thanks to my fabulous sister for helping me with the invites, favors, and the awesome banana cream pie. Oh and taking all the pictures. Yep. She is swell. You can hire her too, you know.

Nothing screams Ross like sugar. So here is the layout:

His favorite brownie (caramel), cookies (chocolate chip & butterscotch), and frozen treat (the most sugary rice krispy ice cream concoction served with those strawberries on top). His co -worker brought those gingerbread cookies to share.

His favorite donuts (krispy creme) and his favorite candies (Starbursts and m&m's)

Also his favorite pie (banana cream), cake, (this angel food cake creation - I now make it in trifle form - so much easier and more pleasing to the eye), and his fave ice cream one of his favorites any way was sliced & put on that last plate (peppermint).

I didn't completely fail as a mother. I did make my daughter a birthday cake as well. I also may have convinced her the party was for her. She had a great time playing with all of her cousins - disaster avoided. Phew!

Side note/story about the cake: If there is one word to describe my daughter it would be 'particular'. At least, that is the nicest word I could come up with. Kidding. But any who, she talked about having a rainbow cake for a good 2 months prior to her birthday. I envisioned a cake, that when cut into, would have the colors of the rainbow (seen here). So I showed her a picture and she said no. So we looked up rainbow cakes and searched till she found the perfect one (it had to be white, with chocolate inside, a rainbow on top and rainbows all around. Seriously.) I used Ener -G egg replacer and my family's from scratch recipe for the cake and cream cheese frosting for the top. Anna has never eaten cake before, even when there has no eggs so I really don't know why I bothered making it egg free, but whatever.

She helped me make it and was in love with the results, even if I wasn't. She was so excited to eat it...until the party. We sang happy birthday to her and she didn't even want a slice. The next day she finally tried it. The teeniest bite ever, then said she didn't want to get sick so she didn't eat any more. Dang kid.

Back to the party. Ross was SO surprised...and confused. I had everything ready to go and hidden upstairs in our room and told him when he got home from work he couldn't go in there cause I was wrapping presents. We left shortly after he got home any way to take Anna out to dinner for her birthday. Meanwhile, my mom was waiting around the corner for us to leave and then she rushed in and put the whole thing together. What a swell mom I have.

Probably my favorite part of the party were the favors:

I had some problems finding a place to buy large quantities of syringes. I sought the help from a pharmacy friend, promised I wasn't doing drugs and then proceeded to fill them with pixie sticks and mini m&ms.

With the saying:

Ross likes his sweets,
you may not,
If you've had too much sugar,
Here's an insulin shot.

Some things I learned this week:
- My husband is very unobservant. I came up with some pretty lame excuses for things this week and he bought them all. Maybe I should say trusting instead?
-I am neurotic. I deep cleaned the house (you know, the fun stuff like wiping down the walls and cleaning the base boards) asked him a thousand questions and confirmed our plans for Friday night 10 times and was very particular (theres that word again..hmm, I guess that explains Anna) about how we should do things all week long. I kept thinking 'This is going to give Ross a heads up! Oh no! Oh. Wait. I always act like this. Never mind.' Scary.
-Baking all week for the party and trying to hide all the results from said baking is more difficult than you think.
-Leftovers from a treat party + everyone's presents for Ross birthday were treat related + Christmas time neighbor treats = bad bad bad for me.
-We have such great family & friends - thanks to everyone who came!

Happy Birthday Ross!

And Anna :) Can't believe she is 4. Is it time for Kindergarten yet?
