Big Girl Bed Woes

I need help! Pahlease! When we moved into our new house we decided to put Anna in a big girl bed. She has done awesome at night. She rarely gets out of bed at all and if she does it will be one time and within the first 10 minutes of us putting her to bed, which I can handle. She sleeps all through the night and still gets up around 8AM. No complaints there.

Nap time is a whole different story! She no longer will take a nap. She just gets off her bed and does, who knows what, until 5PM when I go in there and let her come out. I have taken all of her toys and books out during her nap time to see if that helps but she still manages to entertain herself the whole time. I put up blankets over the window to make it dark, she sits in time out for even getting off the bed, yet it all doesn't seem to phase her.

I know she still needs a nap because she is super ornery and if we are in the car anywhere near her nap time she will start to fall asleep (probably because she is so exhausted from taking 2 naps in the last week!) So mothers, fathers, anyone I need your help, your opinion, any hints... I knew switching her to a bed would be difficult for nap time, but is this normal? Is my child just super rebellious? All I know is I am going to lose my mind!

oh i loathed this transition. i think it's normal for the kids to have an adjustement to nap time. jaylee didn't nap for a LONG time. finally her body just gave up and she started taking naps again. i think it's the excitement of new situation that keeps them up. i have no awesome ideas. think if it this way, at least she's STAYING in her for her nap, true? haha.

I love your new house it is so cute and love the big back yard. Good old Utah You don't have backyards like that in vegas. On the nap time I have know idea I am trying to get easton to sleep through the night! Good Luck!

Well, all I can say is...hopefully it's a stage!!! Molly has done extremely well with her transition (not to rub it in), I guess we just got lucky, because she very rarely gets out of bed. Hmmm, no advice from me, only good luck!!!

And I love your house, it looks so nice!

I love the bed!!! Who wouldn't want to hang out in there?!!! So cute. My advice would be to just give her an afternoon dose of benadryl to take her down a few notches. It will be out of her system by the time the nap is over! The perfect afternoon snackeroo!!!

This is totally normal. Most moms are fearful of this transition for this very reason since it is so common. Just keep doing what you are doing. Soon the excitement that she can be free will wear off and she will be back to napping. Based on previous videos on the blog I could conclude that Anna can struggle to fall asleep. Count your blessings that she stays in her room and at least you get a break. A really really really bad habit that I have gotten into with jane, I don't even know how it started because she always napped well is to let her watch cartoons tell she falls asleep. It only takes about five min and when she gets in trouble she doesn't get to watch them and she still falls asleep fine so I don't think that I've damaged her too much. Good luck. Playing with kids sleep always sucks.

You are not the only one honey! I still have problems with this. Even more now cause my 2 share and room and play together. I think it is one of those things that just takes time and hopefully one day will just click. Sorry I am not any help...good luck. And if you find a solution, let me know :)

It will pass, fingers crossed! (love your new house by the way, congrats!) Dayton's bed was really high, so he was scared to get off if I moved his stool, problem solved. And Claire was only around 17 months old when she got the boot, so she didn't get down by her self. Now however she loves to pull out all the clothes in the room and throw them everywhere. One thing that's helped me is to do something calm before hand play a quiet game or watch a show and then I give her a sippy in bed (ya ya I know bad for the teeth, but good for my sanity) Good call on removing the toys but try giving her a book to look at it may keep her in bed. Also play some soft music while she's getting the hang of it. Eventually her body will give in, until then just keep putting her down for a nap, consistency is the key. If you keep her on her schedule she will nap again! Good luck

I wasnt able to read all the other comments, so sorry if I repeat anything anyone said. Austin did this too, and still does it. I think he only gets a good nap in 3 days out of the entire week. He just sits and talks to himself or plays with his blanket. One thing he does know, is that its nap/quiet time. He knows he doesnt have to go to sleep, but he does have to stay in his bed and be quiet while he is in there. I have to have it for my sanity, and he needs a break from his mommy sometimes too, so its a win win.

Hmmm... No pointers for you there. I just wish you luck. Oh, also if you could iron out the kinks and let me know what works I'd appreciate it. Josh will be making the transition within a few months! :)

Love the new house. It looks like you have so much room. I'm up for a visit anytime. Are you still living in the same city? I'm also super excited you are having a boy. We find out this week. Also, you look small for 21 weeks. I swear I'm way bigger than than.

I don't have any advice for you on the bed thing but we'll be making the switch soon so I'm counting on you to have it all figured out by the time we do.

Okay this is what I mean about the "big girl bed" I also had this issue with Baylee! I took all the toys out and that helped for like a second. I even got darker curtains so it would be dark. I wish I had some wisdom for you! Baylee will nap sometimes now and then but honestly when she turned three I kinda gave up on the everyday. So basically good luck!

I do want to echo what Heather has said. We did this a few months ago and it literally took Lizzie about a full month to get the hang of things. All I can say is hang in there and be consistent it will get better. Lizzie literally slept on the floor for the first few weeks and I couldn't do anything about it. She would start in her bed and end up on the floor. I started letting her pick 1 or 2 small toys that she could play with until she got tired. Sometimes she doesn't fall asleep but I still get my quiet time. On the days she doesn't sleep her bedtime gets moved up. The most important is that you get a chance to relax, you then can be a better mom to her. I have talked to other moms, Lizzie can't open the door yet but if Anna can get one of those child door locks, I know it sounds harsh but anything to keep your sanity and make you a better mom. Don't worry it sounds like Anna is a good sleeper I am sure that she will start those naps again. Good Luck just remember it is so much better to do this now than when you have a baby too.

Well all I can say is good luck. Kai went through that too. She is back to napping well finally. It took us a while though. We tried quiet time, stay in your bed and read time, threats, posssitive reinforcement-you name it, we tried it. I think it just depends on the child. Just try whatever is natural, what ever isn't, use all the advice from your bloger friends, ignore it, whatever keeps you sane. It will most likely pass, hopefully sooner that later. Good luck!

That is totally normal!!! I got so frustrated with sydney not wanting to take a nap in her big girl bed that I put up her play pen and when it's nap time I just stick her in it. At first she would cry but that would totally make her fall asleep (it sounds mean) but she needed the nap! Now she likes napping in there.
So I only work the 1st Wed of every month, So this week and next are wide open! I might go to St. George this weekend but am not decided on that. So usually Wed, Thurs, and Friday's are good to do whatever! I really do want to take pictures of Anna as well as go to lunch! I need practice on someone other than Syd and Morgan :)

Taylee did that! It was HORRIBLE. I ended up giving in and giving her her binki and like you said taking everything out. Every day we let her sit in there FOREVER. After about 2 weeks or so she stopped doing it and now I can leave all of her toys in there etc. so my advice is hang in there. don't let down. Keep trying.

like everyone else said, just hang in there. i used to lay down with cambree until she fell asleep and then sneak out. sometimes she would just fall asleep watching a movie.

This was kinda hard with Charlie too, but for the first week we would lay next to him, read one story, and then stay until he fell asleep. When we were next to him he couldn't play, so he got bored and fell asleep. After the first week we just read him the one story, lay by him for a minute or two and leave. He gets upset, but he stays in his bed and goes to sleep. He definitely still need to have a nap! If he doesn't we all go crazy!!! Good luck with everything!!!

CUTE HOUSE!! I am so happy for you guys!! I really don't know what to tell you about the transition. I would say just shut the door and let her cry until she falls asleep on the ground. I am so mean, this would be my strategy. Hopefully you get better suggestions.

By the sound it, this is normal for most children. When Emily went through this stage we just instituted a "quiet time" instead of nap time. I let her look at books but that was all she could do. More often than not she fell asleep. If she didn't, no worries because I still had some time to get caught up on things.
Good luck.
