I Dig This Article

Some might disagree, but I think women have it harder in a lot of different aspects in life. Being pregnant is one of them - it messes with your hormones, plus you get big, then try and lose it all (success if you do) and then you do it all over again. I know some might not have a problem of losing the weight after (I hate those of you, okay so I am jealous) but most people, including me, have to exercise and watch what we eat. We do races, triathlons, eat less treats and the day finally comes when you reach your goal weight and ideal body fat percentage and then you get pregnant again. Right now I hope to have a healthy pregnancy and that is all. What brings all this up? I read this article today and I wanted to sing 3 cheers. Plus I haven't taken pictures in forever and I am at a loss of what to blog about ;) I thought I would share the article. Some of you may not feel the same way, but this is surely how I feel about celebrity fitness. Enjoy....
The December issue of Shape magazine is getting quite a bit of attention—it's the one with 41-year-old Faith Hill on the cover in a bikini.
As she puts it, "Wearing a bikini on a magazine cover is my 41st birthday present to myself."
Well gag me with a shrimp fork.

Faith Hill is a tremendous singer. She's raising three kids, which is hard, hard work. But this photo is just another in a long line of annoying "Aren't I amazing" celebrity features that really ought to come with a warning label.
If Faith Hill's abdomen looks that good after three kids without plastic surgery and a bit of Photoshopping, I'll eat my hat. (I could probably use the fiber anyway.)
Here's my suggested text for that label:

WARNING! ARTICLE CLAIMS DIET AND EXERCISE GAVE 41-YEAR-OLD CELEBRITY A BODY THIS SPECTACULAR. SHE'S ACTUALLY PROBABLY HAD PLASTIC SURGERY, A PERSONAL CHEF, HOURS WITH A TRAINER, AND A LITTLE HELP FROM PHOTOSHOP, SO BEFORE YOU START FEELING GLUM, JUST REMEMBER WHAT YOU'RE LOOKING AT IS AN ILLUSION, A MANUFACTURED IMAGE TO SELL MAGAZINES DESIGNED TO MAKE YOU FEEL BEASTLY SO THAT YOU SPEND MONEY TO IMPROVE YOUR LOOKS DESPITE THE CRAPPY ECONOMY.

I don't know that Faith Hill is a faker, of course. And at least she's not one of those celebrities who claim to have lost baby weight without exercising. As if, Elizabeth Hurley. And Angelina Jolie, is it possible you had the "mommy tuck" after the twins arrived—and that has a lot more to do with your flat belly than breastfeeding alone? Nobody would blame you for it. You had twins, for crying out loud.

I suppose it's possible that stars like Hill are freaks of nature, unravaged by time and childbearing. After all, the ability to sing that well is proof that Mother Nature fiddled with the recipe a bit. But I seriously doubt it. She claims Pilates three times a week and regular sessions on the elliptical trainer were all it took to give her that perfect body.
"I was always very athletic," she said, "playing basketball and softball and running track. But in my 20s and 30s, I'd go through phases with exercise, working out for four weeks before a big tour or video shoot and not doing much afterward.
Then I had three kids and turned 40, so I decided to make a lifestyle change."
If you're not one of those people who'd describe themselves as "very athletic," you might buy this line of hooey and believe that exercise and diet alone can, in fact, give you the body of a 20-year-old even if you're 41 with three kids.

It's not true, at least not for most of us. I've been an athlete my whole life, not just the two weeks before I shot my music videos, I mean, my driver's license photos. I get it from my mom, a marathon runner who can beat that muscle-bound slacker
Ryan Reynolds, even though she's almost 65. (My mom can also run circles around that blowhard Diddy, something that gives me unseemly amounts of joy.)

But Mom's had five kids and even as fit as she is, her abdomen droops like a tea bag. Mine is the same way after just two babies. This is why I thought I'd up my exercise significantly this fall to see whether I could get a celebrity-fit body.

To my regular running and yoga routine, I added four vigorous kickboxing classes a week. This meant I'd need to find more than 8 hours a week to exercise—practically a part-time job--but if that's what it took for me to restore my abdomen to its former (though never spectacular) condition, then it seemed worth it.

I didn't go on a diet, but I didn't add any calories to what I'd normally eat, and I was careful to make myself protein-rich, carbohydrate-light organic meals at home.
The result? Nearly three months later, I can now do 65 pushups in 60 seconds. This is a good score. If you want to pass basic combat training in the army, for example, you only need to do 50 in two minutes. I can do more than 50 sit-ups in a minute, which also beats the army's standards. (Um, does anyone else think the army should have higher standards if middle-aged mothers can beat them?)

So how's my belly? One word: pathetic. It looks like a bowl of rising bread dough, or like sand dunes at a really sad beach. Wait, no. It's a tube sock that has lost all its elastic. So in other words, a person can be in great shape and still look like a cross between the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man and Little Lulu.

I'm more or less at peace with this. Having kids certainly changed my life. It's no wonder it changed my body. I wish I look like a 20-year-old, but I wouldn't trade my kids or the experience of raising them for anything. Nor would I have purely cosmetic surgery, not when there is such great need in the world.

The celebrity mothers who pretend they don't go to extraordinary lengths to look the way they do should be ashamed of themselves, though. They're not coming clean with fans, and they're making it seem like you can achieve physical perfection if you do all the right things.
The truth is, those of us who are regular folk can do all the right things with diet and exercise, even if means we have to get our flabby old selves out of bed before dawn. We can try our best, and we can still be completely and utterly flawed. So it is with life in general.

When my 41st birthday comes around, my present to myself won't be a bikini shot on the cover of a magazine. I hope I'll be able to appreciate my ruined stomach for what it is—a map of my life's experiences, and something to be loved more for its very imperfections. When your next big birthday comes around, I'll wish the same for you.

I couldn't agree with you more! It really does drive me crazy that they look like that after having kids, ya right they did it all on their own! Good article!

oh i like it, i like it ALOT. did you read the comments? the third commenter... about how she just magically lost 30 lbs after her baby? GRRR.

Lori - I usually don't read comments as usually I get riled up at peoples' comments. LOL. So I went and read hers. So not fare, but so is life I guess - I just have to remind myself that skinny doesn't necessarily mean healthy (if you aren't exercising and you are skinny, that is).

The other comments kind of went off on the article for things I wasn't thinking. That we are all jealous of Faith. I admit it, I would be in heaven if my body looked like that when I was 41, heck if it looked like that when I was in high school. But what I thought the article was saying is that these celebrities always make it sound like their body is just naturally skinny/buff. While that may be true for a slim few, I wish some would fess up and say I have a personal trainer and work out 3 hours a day, a chef who cooks for me so I don't slip up, an assistant who dresses me, does my hair and make up and then someone who edits my pictures. Pretty much their job requires them to look like that. Where do I apply for a job like that? ;)

I have to laugh when people comment on celebs and how good they look a week after having a kid...hello--don't these people know that most celebs deliver c section just so they can have a tummy tuck! Plus they have nannies, personal trainers, and cooks on standby to make sure they look fab AND rested. Also, they've had personal trainers and cooks throughout their whole pregnancy whipping up fat free versions of whatever they are craving and kicking their butt into gear when they don't feel like exercising.

Sorry, I wasn't done commenting and Maddux pushed enter. Anyway, when I hear of celebs and their miracle baby weight loss, or their 'naturally' slim frame, I laugh, lace up my shoes, and go for a run. I know the truth. I then think about 'real' women...those women who work out to look good. That's hard to do when you have three kids, a job, and a husband--nanny, chef, and personal trainer not included. Now that's what I call inspiration!

ah megan as i sat down to read this article, i did the overman tuck....i had to do that before I had a child...so i've come to terms with it....and i like the way the lady put it...i wouldn't trade my old body for cooper. and who are you kidding....you don't limit yourself on sweet! you're an overman...we eat entirely too many sweets. 3 more days! i'll email you thanksgiving pics

Thanks so much for posting this. I can relate to the author on how she describes her after two babies stomach. lol. I've been working my butt off after Ava. i sure envy the girls that can just breastfeed and the weight comes melting off. I wish i had that problem.

AMEN! I think more of us want the truth these days than some unrealistic picture that we can't possibly expect to look like. I watched dancing with the stars and almost wanted to die when I looked at Brooke Burke's stomach, and she's had 2 kids. Gag me! I just have to step back and realize that if I had a personal trainer, chef and so forth, I too could look like that (okay, she's still cuter, but you get it).
Thanks for posting an article that makes us mommies feel better not worse about ourselves! :)

Amen Overman! I love this article. Faith Hill is killing me in this bikini. I MEVER looked that good and i'm only 24. i've hit my prime and passed nad never got to look like that. oh well!

Thanks for sharing and lifting those mommies who are sadly out of shape spirits. You would think some of these celebs would want people to know how hard they worked to get their abs or what not. It's an accomplishment. I don't understand why they want to hide that fact. Perhaps because they want people to think they are just naturally that great. Anyway good article and thanks for sharing!

Ha that funny thing is that before I checked your blog I had just finished reading this article. It made me laugh. Yeah all that crazy stuff about celebs having babies and then being tiny, but part of me is super glad I don't have that kind of pressure. I'm sure they go to crazy extremes to look they way they do. Also, I saw a picture of Anna on Chelsie's blog and her hair is getting longer, it makes her look older.

I totally agree! After I had Sydney I was pretty pumped when I lost the weight in less than a year, Morgan has thrown me for a loop! The only thing thats helped me lose weight this time was getting the flu this weekend, and that just sucks!

Carlee Hoopes said...

Yeah, that article's awesome. Finally the truth comes out. I agree with Melissa though, I'd want to tell everybody what I did to get into shape...that's an accomplishment!

Amen sista! I bet Faith couldn't do a freakin' triathalon and look, you can! So ha! Love your guts.

Ugh, I know what you mean..yeah IF I could have that body and the BOOBS after three kids *sorry about the descriptive word there* I was just complaining last night about how hard I have worked to loose weight after baby three and what pops into my head this image of Faith Hill..and I thought, man I suck, she's 41, I'm 27 what's my excuse? Hmm maybe I DON"T have all the personal trainers and such she does and a personal chef and all the time in teh world to exercise because I DON'T have a nanny to watch my kids while I spend hours at a gym..oh and if my husband was freaking rich like they are maybe I wouldn't feel guilty buying all the gym equipment and I'd have money to burn on things to make me look good....hmmm I think I am right there with you with the frustration..especially the part about FINALLY getting back to where you want to be and bam..your prego again..no announcements here, its just happened to me before.

Celebrity bodies suck! I wish I looked like that, but we all know it's not true. I love the article and totally can relate. Every time I look at all my strech marks and I say something awful about them, I totally have to remember with out them means I never had two sweet and adorable little girls and I would die if I didn't have them in my life. Just that little piece of knowledge should make me stop complaining about my flabby, scared body. Thanks for helping me remember what's important to me and a little (or alot) of excercise never hurt anybody, right? ;)

I LOVE LOVE that article....SOOO TRUE! It makes me so mad that celebritys pretend like a little hard work makes them beautiful after children. It is personal trainers dietitians and photoshop. I saw that cover of Faith in the grocery store and had to read it and just roll my eyes too. :)

Thank you for posting this. I really needed someone to tell me that it's okay to have a realistic body. It's hard not to get down on yourself when you look like this! Thanksgiving did a number on my spare tire and I haven't had time to work on it yet. I was skinnier while I was nursing, how pathetic is that! I know why, I just wish I could have kept it off!!!

Megan said...

MELISSA - I totally agree. I would want to tell everyone how hard I had to work to get that body. Doesn't it mean more to you if you have to work to get it. Be proud!

CHELSIE - I know I like my treats. But when I was trying to lose the weight after I had Anna I didn't have treats in my house for almost a year. That is not to say I didn't eat them. I just only ate them when I went places and was offered some treats. It really helped me to not have sweets in the house. If only I could say that I was still doing that...hmmm.....

Ahh! Good post....I was looking at my belly today in the mirror and I was thinking maybe after I have the baby and if I work my butt off for a year I might be able to tuck it into my old pants and then try to conseal it with a sweat shirt! It seems like it will never shrink back down and heck I still have 7 weeks left! Man...it was so good to read everyone else's comments on this. It cracks me up! Good post! Thanks.

I don't know what everyones problem is...I've had 2 kiddos and my abs look like that. Okay maybe not, but that is how I picture them. I do with that with 2 kids I could find the time to work out like I wanted to and I don't do 5 o'clock in the morning so that is not even an option.

Thanks for the great review and the much needed laugh. Lets admit we will all probably have those 5 extra pounds (or more) to loose and our true weight will probably never match the one that is on our drivers license. But despite all of that hopefully we can still be happy with ourselves!!

Megan thanks for sharing this interesting article. I totally agree. I'm glad the truth cam out. It is not easy to keep the pounds off. I try my hardest to eat right and exercise, and I usually don't gain just maintain my weight for 9 years now.

What is depressing me right now is that I'm not even 12 weeks along yet, and my belly is as big is it was when I was 20 weeks with my first!! I mean, before I was pregnant, I would just think about it and my tummy would inflate. Ugh. I need some blueberry pancakes right now, I don't even care. And yes, I did get my Jamba, but I am still craving that too. I think you should also put a "currently craving" on your side-bar. I would love to know what you're in the mood for. It's kind of fun. Then maybe your hubby will be sweet and bring it home from you one day. *hint hint*

I wish you guys would stop picking on me! If you knew how painful all my surgeries were, it would make you all want to keep your non-attractive bodies. I'm sorry I'm so beautiful, I just can't help it :(

Meg! First of all, CONGRATS on the bun in the oven, girl!!! I'm sorry that I'm behind on the blogging game and I didn't know sooner!! How cool that you guys are on to numero dos!

About the article: it really cracked me up. That picture does make me ill. No plastic surgery? What a crock. It's sad that I haven't even had kids yet and I've never looked like that. :)

Congrats again and Happy Holidays!!!

Hmm... I wonder who is buying these magazines and supporting such a twisted lifestyle? From the post and the comments I can find a few, including the writer herself.
