Ummm Help Please!

Firstly, Annabelle really is a well behaved little girl...at home. For some reason when we go public she goes into super whiny, tantrum throwing mode. I thought it was supposed to be the terrible two's? I still have 4 months left!! Any who, at home when she throws a fit (usually over not getting a sippy cup overflowing with milk because she needs to finish the half empty one first...seriously..this is the thing she throws the biggest fit over) I just let her throw it, be it 10 minutes long and I pay no attention to her. In public its another story...

Why is it when I am in a restaurant and she starts to whine I feel like I need to acknowledge it? Then I usually say if you want ___ then you need to stop ____. If you don't stop ____ then you don't get ____. It works at home, but not here. She just screams and I take ____ away which results in a bigger tantrum. People start to stare and I want to give in just to make her be quiet, but if I do that then she will think when we are out she can get away with this kind of stuff. So I need help from other mom's. What do you do in that situation?

Another topic I need help on is baking. I always have really ripe banana's and I end up making banana bread and/or muffins way too frequently. When I make banana muffins I make the yummy crumbly topping. It's the only way to go when eating muffins. Anyway, so I decided to make it and put it on my banana bread. This is what happened...

Only some of it actually remained on the sides of the bread, all the rest fell into the middle and sunk to the bottom ('The ocean is big and blue, I just wanna sink to the bottom with you'...sorry)

The bread looks like a butt and you can see all the brown sugar/cinnamony ooey goodness at the bottom. The bread still tasted good, but does anyone know how I can prevent this from happening.

And to end on a happy note, Annabelle is talking more (I know, how can it be possible?) and just crackin us up with the funny things she has been saying lately. I have seen this on others' blogs and thought I would start a list of 'Anna's funnies' on the side of our blog. Hopefully I will remember to update it frequently. Enjoy!

Oh and you can wish my lil' sister Happy Birthday (it's tomorrow) here. She will love that she will have over 40 comments on one post. You know you will Ove!

Thanks for being such a great sister to me, not so much in high school, but that was well deserved on my bratty behalf ;) I love that we talk on the phone almost daily and I enjoy our crazy weirdness that no ones thinks is funny but us (let's remember singing and dancing to Blue's Clues in New York and people stopping to watch us). You make me laugh, you always comfort me and reassure me when I over think things and I am oh so jealous of your awesome good looks. Hope you have a great day! Love ya!

Meg, K I put topping on my banana bread too, but I wait to put it on after it has already baked awhile. I don't have my recipe on hand but I would say 3/4 the way through I take it out and then add the topping. So it's a little more substantial. Anyways I'm sure you get the idea. Wish I had advice on little annabelle but sorry no children yet! At least she's cute.

yeahhh iPhone decided to work. Anyway totally stoked for z bread! That recipe is totally my style. As for the bread/annabelle issue I am totally useless. But I am excited for the funny saying thing you are going to start. It will be hilarious I'm sure.

Choices! It's the only thing I've had any luck with but there is a learning curve. So lets say your at dinner and she wants the salt shaker. You say Anna the shaker is off limits but you can have your monkey or a chip. OK that is a totally lame example. But I have found that choices really work for Jane. I highly suggested ready love and logic from birth to six years. I really need to re-read it but I still remember it a lot and use it and think it is good. I think the bread looks awesome. That means that the crumby goodness is all through the bread. Can't wait to read Anna's funnies I think I will steal your idea.

I think where you got confused is that moms recipe is for banana nut bread...since you didn't add nuts, you made banana butt bread...boo hahaha. Agreed, Anna is a good girl, and I have no advice...at home I let Coop throw his tantrum and try to averty his attention elsewhere...but in public I usually give in. Check it out you got a comment from Lacie in Wisconsin! Thanks for the birthday wishes! I heart you and our friendship! Maybe we didn't like each other prior to Dixie so we could appreciate our love now..haha..tear. But for real, you're always there to talk too and always make me laugh..we should bust out that video from NY...ah it's full of funnies! PS my cinnamon rolls are in the bread machine now...i'm so excited

Mmmm...butt bread.

I wish I had some good advice for you on the tantrum thing. Just remember that when you are out in public, even though it seems like everyone is watching you and criticizing you, they are probably just thinking "been there, done that" So don't worry about ignoring her tantrums. Just do what you would normally do. Hope that helps a little.

I love the Overman sisters!! I can just hear your voice in this and it makes me so happy to read it. As for the tantrum thing, I'm not a mother yet, but a teacher, and all I can say is hold your ground! I teach all kinds of kids that have thrown a big enough fit to get what they want and that's what they'll do all the way until they're 18....in other words, not so much fun to teach! I understand how hard it is though! You are a great mom and a great wife with all of your banana pastries. I'll need to get the recipes...look pretty delish!

oh, its so cute that you two sisters love each other now! I remember growin up how much you didnt get along, ha I think that is how it is with all siblings! Your bread is cracking me up, it is actually good to see that you messed up on something that you cooked, sorry but I've never seen it before!

I am diggin all this advice - thanks everyone!

KYLEE - I can only imagine the things you see as a teacher - definitely good to see things from your perspective.

SARAH - I have heard of the book before and have been meaning to read it. I really am going to now!

MELISSA - I thought maybe that was the key to a crumbly top, but I didn't know at what time I should pull out the bread to add it - thanks for the help!

BECKY - that is what I try and tell myself, but those dang older people look at me like they have forgotten that they were once in my shoes. I just need to get over it I guess.

Oh and there are Annabelle funnies already on the side of my blog, just under her picture.

Addie isn't a toddler yet, but I still have sympathy with the Anna tantrum situation. I always feel like Addie isn't allowed to even cry in public, even though she's an infant and that's what they do.
So anyway...my advice (and again, I'm not an expert) is to take her out of the situation and let her tantrum it out.
If she wants something and you don't want to give in to her and she starts to throw a tantrum, take her outside or to the car or just away from the big group of people. This way, she'll get it out of her system without you stressing about disrupting people around you.
I know that when I was little the threat to "go sit in the car" always resulted in a major attitude adjustment.
Not sure if or how well this works, but I'd give it a shot.
Let me know so I can prepare myself for the future! ;)

Oh yes my advice is no more babies! Yep, that is how I am fixing my tantrum problem. Love the butt bread. I was excited to see how to fix it too.

I'm glad you asked that question Megan. As we approach the toddler stage I've been wondering the same thing. You Overmans sisters are just the greatest. I'm glad I know both of you and all your craziness.

I totally am with you on the tantrum thing...I think it is really a girl thing cause Mckay never used to throw tantrums and Ky is such a BRAT! I always have to take her outside to get her to calm down cause we are making a huge scene in the restaurant. I am not sure about the banana bread...you are a much better baker than me :)

ps. love the "Fountains of Wayne" reference...totally reminds me or Craig...
Oh baby please leave the biker leave the biker break his heart. hehe

Hi, Meggy! Are you proud? This is the first comment I've EVER posted on anyone's blog. How prestigious of a position you're in! So good job on your half marathon. I'm needing to do that soon. To answer your question, I got that dress at JC Penny. Thanks for your compliment! Anyway, your blog is super cute and I think about you often. Love ya much!

I don't know what to tell you...it is easier to control them at home than out in public. I have taken my girls out to the car and made them sit in there while I am close by where they don't see me but that is a lot of work and I think I have only used it once or twice. Good luck!

My advice for tantrum situations, for what it's worth, is give choices like some one already said, totally ignore no matter how many looks, but what I usually do is I pick Katelyn up and go out to the car. I stick her in her car seat and shut the door. I stand outside and wait till she looks calm and then I ask her if she's ready to be happy and continue whatever we are doing. And yes, if it is hot, I do turn on the car and give her lots of air conditioning. I do this so no one has to hear it, especially me and she doesn't get the attention she is seeking by having this behavior. They learn pretty quick that it is more fun to stay happy and stay with everyone else.

Your bread is hilarious. You get an "E" for effort. I bet it tasted great though because it looks good. I hate those moments in restraunts or at people's house when your kids just flips out. I've always heard that you are just supposed to let them throw the tantrum and not give in. Not that easy when you have 100 pair of eyes staring you down. Right now we are in the "lets make a deal stage". First we have to get her to calm down. Then we say have this right now and you can have this (whatever it is she is crying over) later. Unless she really can't have it later. Then we just try to distract her with something else. This is all her dad's idea. She actually gets it. Like I said first you have to teach her to calm down so you can reason with her. We are still learning this toddler-tantrum thing too.

I love that chelsie called it banana butt bread. I got a good laugh out of that one...and since i don't cook (I'd like to thank my husband for that) I have no advice to give but I must say Anna wasn't that bad on our outing...she was cute. She was just concerned over Ever crying so much. Well, we need to do that more. Good stuff!

ok-so i told chelsie that my kids never had temper tantrums. I am such a liar!!
ok-4 did this the other day in target and to say that I was ready to lose it-is an understatement.
I read somewhere that you need to take them out of the situation-so I took her to the back of the store, away from people looking at me and we had a little chat. I let her throw a fit a little bit longer, but at least it wasn't where all could see me being such a great parent.
This trick really helped. She was much better after that and I didn't have to deal with the whole fit throwing again.
Try it, what have you got to lose right?
As for the banana bread-I din't read all the comments, so maybe someone said this already-put it on the top the last 5 mins. Then you wont have butt bread:) and it will have the yummy crunch!
Ps-thanks for the pic of the fruity pebbles. Chelsie told me that too, just not as greaphic!

Even though I have been in your shoes many times and still am some days. As I have a 9 yr. old that sill throws fits and 13 too. It is for sure easier to deal with them at home. If it happens in other places I have usually taken them to the car for time out and as they get older it is taken things away from them and that works for us. Good Luck it is part of them finding there own independence. Your bread looks good even though it does look like a butt. Your funny! I have a great banana bar recipe that we love better then the bread. I'll email it too you. I love keeping in touch with you.

Megan- you Overmans make me look like a terrible wife/mother when it comes to cooking. I need to be better. Its the planning that I am lacking. I actually enjoy making & eating great food, its just rare that I take the time to have all the needed ingreients for preparation. Can't wait to see you all.
